Forfeit seals close win for Pirate grapplers

Brookville — The Greensburg varsity wrestling team finished its dual meet season with a 33-27 victory over Franklin County Wednesday in Brookville.

The Pirates improved to 17-3 on the season.

Winning for the Pirates were freshman Dakota Ballard, seniors Blake Wood, Joel Chase and Joe Buening, freshman Damon Allen, and seniors Colten Black, and Drew Neisius. The Pirates fell behind early as Franklin County won the first five matches to take an 18-0 lead.  The Pirates then fought back with five wins in a row from pins by Wood, Chase, and Buening, then wins by decision for Allen and Black.

The two teams then alternated decisions at 195, 220, and 285.

Ballard won by forfeit at 106 pounds to seal the win for the Pirates.

“We are pleased to get the win,” said Greensburg head coach Matt Cochran. “Franklin County is a good team and it was a very even matchup all night long.

According to Cochran, the Wildcats won a few toss-up matches at 113, 120, and Heavyweight, while Greensburg won toss-up matches at 170 and 182.

Next up for the Pirates is the EIAC Tournament at South Dearborn on Saturday.  Wrestling will begin at about 10 a.m.

“This Saturday should be an exciting match-up in the EIAC tournament,” said Cochran. “Several teams are contenders, including us and Franklin County.”

In JV action, the Pirates went 3-3 in the six matches wrestled. Winning for the Pirates were Travis Gauck, Gavin Keppel, and Doug Cain. The JV will finish their season this Saturday at Seymour. Wrestling will begin at 9 a.m.
