— The Greensburg wrestling team is advancing 11 individual wrestlers to the regional tournament. The Pirates’ historical season will continue Saturday in the IHSAA Jeffersonville Regional, which will host 19 teams from the Jeffersonville and Jennings County sectionals.
Wrestling for second place Saturday were senior Drew Neisius at 220 pounds, senior Joe Buening at 160 pounds, junior Nathan Hayes at heavyweight and sophomore Brandon Butz at 120 pounds.
Taking third were freshman Zack Bartosz at 113 pounds, sophomore Jack Michalski at 126, senior Blake Wood at 145, senior Joel Chase at 152 and senior Colten Black at 182.
The Pirates placed two in fourth and one in fifth. Fourth-place finishers for Greensburg were freshman Dakota Ballard at 106 pounds and freshman Dylan Cain at 195.
Ballard started with a bye at 106 pounds, then pinned Logan Long of Madison in 29 seconds. Ballard was pinned by Brown County’s Evan Bullock in 1:01, but still had a chance to place. He beat Seymour’s Alex Berry by a 16-1 technical fall, and fell to Jennings County’s Kyle Lewis in a 10-0 major decision to take fourth place. Ballard advances to the regional with a 25-7 record.
Sophomore Brandon Butz at 120 pounds advanced all the way to the championship round. After a bye, Butz pinned Seymour’s Josh Rohde in 1:09, then pinned Columbus North’s Will Speaker in 1:36. Butz fell to Brown County’s Austin Walsh in a 5:33 pin for second place, advancing to the regional with a 25-9 record.
Victor Ablaine (132) fell to Dalton Noblitt of Columbus East by pin in 0:41. Ablaine finished his season at 3-12.
Blake Wood (145) pinned Columbus North’s Jacob Lashley in 4:15 after a first round bye. Wood fell to Seymour’s Matthew Ruddick in a 5-3 decision in the semifinal. He beat Madison’s Cameron Napier by pin in 2:27, then won third place with a 7-6 decision over Jennings County’s John Flynn.
Joe Buening at 160 had a first-round bye, then pinned Seymour’s Alex Franklin in 1:12. Buening beat Columbus East’s Maurice Dantzler in a 10-5 decision, and fell to Madison’s Jordan Partee in a 23-8 technical fall to take second place. Buening advances with a 27-9 record, while Partee advances at 45-0.
At 182 pounds, senior Colten Black won a 9-2 decision over Corbin Hughes after a first-round bye. Black fell to Jennings County’s Peyton Shepherd in the semifinal by a 3-2 decision, but advanced in the third-place bracket over Seymour’s Fransisco Marcos. Black won third place with a 3-2 decision over Columbus East’s Coy Park. Black enters the regional with a 28-8 record.
Drew Neisius followed a first-round bye with a pin of Columbus East’s Jarod Stradtmiller in 1:59. He pinned Columbus North’s Brandon Woods in 5:07, but fell to Colton Castetter of Jennings County in the final. Neisius qualifies for regional with a 26-4 record.
Saturday’s Regional competition will begin at 9:30 a.m.
Top seeds will wrestle four-seeds, and two-seeds will face three-seeds.
