Greensburg — The South Decatur girls basketball team dominated visiting Edinburgh 63-37 Monday night.

The Lady Cougars enjoyed a 37-14 halftime lead and didn’t look back.

South (8-9) shot 75 percent in the second quarter to pull away from the Lancers, highlighted by a 21-2 run.

Head coach Jessi McConnell attributed the win largely to communication.

“Communication was much better,” she said.

Five different players scored for South in the second quarter. Sophomore Morgan Eden scored her first career varsity points on a rebound basket to make it 35-14.

Freshman Brooke Helms scored seven points in the first half. Junior Megan Niese and freshman Stacy Fox added 10 apiece, but the offensive attack was fueled by an overall team effort on defense.

“We tried something different in the first quarter,” said McConnell of South’s defense, which executed in the second quarter. “We were working on it. Our traps were looking better. It looked better (as the game went on).”

Seniors Ashley Johannigman and Julia Miller each scored six points in the third quarter.

Nine players scored for the Lady Cougars, led by 14 points apiece from senior Julia Miller and freshman Stacy Fox. Junior Megan Niese scored 12, while senior Ashley Johannigman scored nine. Freshman Brooke Helms scored seven points. Senior Courtney Billingsley, freshman Sierra Deppe and Morgan Eden each added two, while Olivia Fry chipped in one.

Also playing off the bench were freshmen McKenzie Kopplin and Delanie Diekhoff. Most of the junior varsity squad tallied varsity minutes because there was no JV game.

“It was nice to play most of the freshmen,” said McConnell.

South next plays Thursday, with Senior Night against North Decatur. The Lady Cougars will honor seniors Courtney Billingsley, Ashley Johannigman and Julia Miller.
