Greensburg — The North Decatur boys basketball team hosted Southwestern (Shelbyville) Thursday in a game with very few offensive highlights.

The Chargers, looking to solidify their chance to grab a share of the Mid-Hoosier Conference title, fell to the visiting Spartans 35-24.

The teams entered the game with identical records (3-13), but the Chargers had the upper hand in the MHC with a 3-4 mark. The Spartans were 2-5.

When the final numbers were tallied, the scorebook revealed that the teams combined for 17 total field goals.

The Spartans outscored North 13-6 in the first eight minutes, but the teams played even (6-6) in the second quarter. The visitors pulled away from North with a 9-5 third-quarter edge.

North pulled to within single digits, 30-21, with 3:27 left in the game. A 3-pointer by sophomore Dayne Lecher made it 31-24 with 2:20 left, but North was unable to capitalize offensively the rest of the way.

Sophomore Evan Wallpe led North (3-14 overall, 3-5 in MHC) with nine points. Lecher followed with eight. Sophomore Donovan Meyer, sophomore Andrew Hocker and junior Eric Moorman each added two, while junior Austin Brown added a free throw.

The North junior varsity team won the first game 38-36.

Kyle Kramer led North with 11 points. Ben Kinker, Landon Crites and Cory Fasbinder followed with seven apiece, while Luke Perdue added two.

North will visit South Decatur Saturday night for a conference showdown, with the JV game tipping off at 6 p.m.
