County runners excel at MHC meet

The North Decatur and South Decatur cross country teams competed in the Mid-Hoosier Conference tournament Saturday at Hoosier Horse Park in Johnson County.

The North girls placed fourth with 82 points, while the North boys placed seventh overall with 160. Eastern Hancock won the girls race (34), while Indian Creek (64) won the boys race.

North sophomore Megan Hoover was the conference champion, one year after finishing runner-up in the MHC. Hoover won the meet by 25 seconds over the second-place runner.

“I’m especially happy for and proud of Megan Hoover,” said North coach Scott Johnson. “Last year she was conference runner-up. That wasn’t good enough in her mind, so she set a goal to be the individual champion this year. The not only accomplished that goal – she destroyed it as she won the conference by 25 seconds over second place. I look forward to seeing what she can do at the sectionals on Tuesday.”

North’s Brady Holloway missed the 15-runner All-Conference cut by less than one minute.

For South Decatur, Justyn Clark, Ashley Hamilton and Stacy Fox all finished as All-Conference. Hamilton took fifth place in 21:48.

Three South runners achieved their personal-best times. Fox’s 15th-place 23:56 was a personal best, as well as senior Brandon Overlock’s 43rd-place 20:54 and Daniel Mapes’ 53rd-place 22:57.

“They all have worked so hard for this meet at practice,” said South coach Bethany Fromer. “I am excited for my all conference runners, as well as those who broke personal records. They will have one more chance to meet goals and times at sectional on Tuesday.”

For the Lady Cougars, senior Emily Mapes took 20th with a time of 24:49, and senior Paje Smiley was 45th in 33:10.

For the South boys, Clark took seventh overall in 17:38. Nick Grissom was 29th in 19:24 and senior Tyler Wamsley was 47th in 21:18.
