---- — The South Decatur football team fell to host West Washington 21-12 Friday in the first round of the Sectional tournament.

The game got off to a slow start, according to head coach Rodney Martin, as the teams exchanged three-and-out possessions to start the game.

South broke through after going to its running game, marching down the field and scoring. Brayden Helms ran in for a touchdown, making it 6-0. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful, though.

The first quarter ended with South leading 6-0.

West Washington’s offense picked up the momentum and scored 21 points in the second quarter, which proved to be enough for the Senators.

Coach Martin commented on the adversity the Cougars encountered in the second quarter.

“We had several dropped passes, and defensively, we struggled in the second quarter,” said Martin, South’s fifth-year head coach.

The Cougars made adjustments defensively at halftime, and South responded by shutting out the Senators in the second half.

Randall Canady scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to cut it to 21-12.

“That’s as close as we would get,” said Martin.

South concludes the season with a 3-7 record, while the Senators advance with a 4-6 mark.

Martin commented on the senior class afterward.

“I am proud of our seniors,” he said. “We will miss this group very much, as they have done a lot for our program.”

Damen Martin led South in rushing with 10 carries for 54 yards and a long rush of 20. Helms tallied eight carries for 40 yards, Canady rushed seven times for 12 yards and Chris Johannigman rushed four times for eight yards.

Johannigman, South’s three-year starting quarterback, completed 17 of 40 passes for 172 yards and an interception. He finishes his senior year with 1,310 yards on 101 completions, six touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Seven different Cougars caught passes for the Cougars. Tyler Hahn caught three for a team-high 57 yards, with a long catch of 35 yards. Jordan Ortman caught a team-high four passes for 38 yards, and Chris Meadows caught three for 22. Andrew Wullenweber caught two for 21, Damen Martin caught two for 17, Helms caught two for nine and Canady caught an eight-yard pass.

Damen Martin led South with 14 total tackles on the night, while Hahn and Chris Meadows each tallied six. Johannigman and Jordan Edwards each recorded five stops.

Tackles: Myles Lewellyn 4, Canady 4, Helms 3, Wullenweber 3, Kaleb Gahwiller 3, Luke Ryle 2, Shay Ogle 2.

South forced two turnovers, with Hahn intercepting a pass and Gahwiller forcing a fumble.
