Greensburg — The Greensburg varsity softball team, ranked sixth in the latest ICGSA Class 3A poll, tallied its fifth straight win Friday. The Lady Pirates defeated visiting Jac-Cen-Del 12-1 in a five-inning, run-ruled outing.

Head coach Jake Shook saw Greensburg achieve a pair of season firsts, both in the same inning. After junior starter Alli Phillips pitched two innings, freshman Whitney Tallent took over in the third for her varsity debut.

Greensburg’s offense, meanwhile, wasted no time seizing a lead. Senior Audrey Geis led off the home half of the first inning with a walk. Freshman Britney Biltz reached on an error, and sophomore Megan Schmidt drove in Geis with a single. Senior Clare Owens provided the at-bat that proved to be the difference maker in the outcome, sacrificing to score Biltz and make it 2-0.

Senior Shelby Ward joined in, reaching on an error that scored Schmidt and capped the first inning damage at 3-0.

After Phillips singled in the second inning, sophomore Emma Wolter courtesy ran and later scored on a Geis groundout. Freshman Kalynne Asche scored moments earlier.

Eight Lady Pirates stepped to the plate in the third inning. Chelsea Hersley reached on another Eagle error, followed by Tallent’s first hit and run batted in on the varsity level. Hersley scored, and Asche reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Tallent. Geis singled, and Biltz then belted a three-run home run over the fence for the first round-tripper she hit at home. The blast scored Asche and Geis to cap a five-run, three-hit frame, making it 10-1.

Enjoying their career firsts for Greensburg were Tallent and Biltz, in the same inning.

Greensburg was retired in order in the fourth inning, but wrapped it up in the fifth. Asche drew a one-out walk. Geis then doubled, bringing up Biltz. She ripped the first pitch she saw just foul outside the third-base line. On the second pitch, Biltz sent Asche and Geis home with a triple, ending the game.

Geis went 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored. Biltz went 2-for-3 with a home run, triple, five RBI’s and two runs. Schmidt went 2-for-3 with a run, and Owens chipped in a sacrifice RBI. Wolter had a stolen base and a run, and Asche walked and scored. Phillips went 1-for-1, while Hersley and Tallent each added a run.

Phillips and Tallent combined for just one run and one hit, while Tallent recorded the lone strikeout by Pirate pitching.
