The 12U Redlegs Baseball Club claimed their first championship of the young season over the weekend of April 13 and 14 by posting six consecutive victories in the Columbus Crush Wood Bat Tourney. The Redlegs posted a perfect 6-0 record in two days.
The first game Saturday saw the Redlegs outscore the Shelby County Sliders 5-3.
Game two featured Cody Wilson, Seth Wilkerson, and Aaron Greiwe combining to shut down the Spencer Cannons (who had eliminated the Redlegs in last week’s tourney) 17-2. Joel Norman knocked in four runs while Cooper Yancey tripled two times, scored twice, and drove in two runs.
Game three of the day featured Greiwe and Noah Rutan teaming up to shut out the host Crush 4-0. Rutan pitched five innings and struck out nine batters to pick up the win.
Sunday’s first game against the Martinsville Bandits resulted in a 6-2 Redleg victory. Wilkerson pitched a complete game 2- hitter with 10 strikeouts. The second game was another rematch with the Spencer Cannons, and behind the complete game effort of Conner Barkes, the Redlegs cruised to a 13-2 win.
That left the championship game between the Bandits and Redlegs, a repeat of earlier action. This time, Joel Norman took control on the mound, pitching all six innings and striking out seven Bandit batters in a 5-2 victory. Greiwe had a RBI single to open the scoring in the second, and he came around to score on a double by Cody Wilson. Kyle Shaver’s sac fly plated a run in the third, and the score remained 3-0 into the fifth.
The Bandits rallied for two in their half, but the Redlegs answered with two of their own to finish the scoring and enjoy the tournament championship.
