Pirate girls top Shelbyville 53-26

Shelbyville — The Greensburg girls varsity basketball team recorded its first win of the season Tuesday night, beating host Shelbyville 53-26.

Balanced scoring and a suffocating defense led to the Lady Pirates’ win. Greensburg forced 29 turnovers and tallied 12 steals.

“We were excellent defensively throughout the game,” said Greensburg head coach Mike Miller. “Overall, we had a very good effort with good, balanced scoring and a really nice commitment to playing hard and playing together defensively.”

Miller noted inconsistency on offense after a solid first half, as Greensburg struggled in the third quarter.

Overall, senior Clare Owens scored a team-high 12 points. Abbey Denton, Jessica Banaschak, and Taylor McIntosh each scored nine points, and Joanna Redelman added eight. Banaschak and Owens grabbed six rebounds apiece. Owens tallied three steals and McIntosh dished out five assists.

Greensburg’s varsity team hosts South Decatur (0-3) Friday night. The game is at 6:30 p.m. because South has no junior varsity squad.

The Greensburg junior varsity team beat the Golden Bears 40-21 in the first game. The Pirates built an 8-3 lead after the first quarter, and tallied a 10-0 edge in the third period to pull away. Maddi Hellmich and Kalynne Asche each scored 11 points to lead Greensburg. Keauna Schultz followed with seven, including a 3-for-4 effort from the foul line. Kasey Moeller scored six and Megan Schmidt chipped in five. Hellmich and Asche each hit a pair of 3-pointers.
