Area race fans will be happy to once again have the opportunity to attend the annual Dwenger Memorial United Midget Racing Association races that will once again help kick off the 2014 Decatur County Fair Thursday evening.
UMRA President Eric Fehrman commented on the return of the Dwenger Memorial events to the local fairgrounds track.
“We thought it was the right thing to do,” said Fehrman. “The Dwenger Memorial race was a part of our local Fair, and on our UMRA schedule, but the local race ended in 2007. We have put in a lot of effort since I’ve been UMRA President to return this event honoring the memory of Dick and Larry Dwenger to the 2014 schedule for all the local fans and friends of the UMRA racing family. Thursday evening there will be numerous UMRA founders, drivers, and owners in attendance, so come on out and renew old friendships and see some great UMRA racing!”
The renewal of the popular Dwenger Memorial event will once again focus on the memory of two of the UMRA’s most prominent drivers and owners - Dick and Larry Dwenger. Ironically, and certainly fitting, the return of this competitive UMRA event comes on the 20th anniversary of the 1994 passing of both of these prominent, local 3/4 midget racing icons. Dick Dwenger (1931-1994) was a well liked pioneer, mechanic, and driver in 3/4 midget racing. In 1961 when the UMRA was established, Dick was an original charter member. He helped establish the UMRA by serving on technical committees, on the board of directors, and as vice-president. Dick was a well- respected driver behind the wheel winning the UMRA driving championship in 1970 and 1974. He amassed 18 UMRA Feature wins in his driving career, and was UMRA Sportsman of the Year in 1964, 1973, and 1990. Dick set many new track records at tracks in Indiana and Ohio before retiring from driving to help his son-Larry continue their Greensburg family racing tradition.
