The North Decatur boys basketball team clinched its first win of the season Friday in an energetic 55-42 win over visiting Jac-Cen-Del.
The Chargers gave a four-quarter effort and built on a halftime lead with a crucial third-quarter run.
Benefiting from balanced scoring among six different players, the Chargers established the early advantage. Senior John Hammersmith scored North’s first four points, and three freshmen followed his lead. Luke Badgley dropped in a 3-pointer off an assist from junior Brock Ricke, and Ricke deposited his own triple to make it 12-4. Zach Johnson scored four points in the opening quarter.
North encountered a road block early in the second quarter. The Eagles went on a 13-4 run that spanned the start of the second quarter, and took a 17-16 lead. However, one North senior connected with another as Jason Kirchhoff assisted Mitch Knecht on a trey from the wing. Leading 19-17 inside the three-minute mark, North closed the half with four straight points from senior Kevin Geis. Kirchhoff provided the assist on the half’s final score by Geis.
The closest the Eagles threatened in the second half was a 7-3 surge. Hammersmith took the Chargers on his shoulders, sparking a 13-0 run in the final minutes of the third quarter. North expanded its lead with more contributions from freshmen. Hammersmith assisted Dayne Lecher on a trey, and Johnson later grabbed a steal and took it to the hoop.
Head coach Kyle Nobbe applauded his team for its defensive effort in the third quarter without committing a foul. North (1-3) outscored the Eagles 16-9 in the third quarter.
“That was the key of the game for us,” he said. “We talked about it this week and at halftime.”
Hammersmith, who scored a game-high 23 points, scored 12 in the fourth quarter and eight straight to increase the lead to 15 late in the game.
Zach Johnson followed with seven points, while Ricke and Geis each scored six. Dayne Lecher scored three, while Kirchhoff, Knecht and Luke Badgley each added three.
The North junior varsity team fell to the Eagles 36-34 in the first game.
Andrew Hocker led North with nine points. Dayne Lecher scored eight, Eric Moorman scored five, and adding four apiece were Evan Wallpe and Donovan Meyer. Arek Holloway and Matthew Laudick each chipped in two.
