Greensburg selected for Hall of Fame Classic

The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame announced the selections and pairings, Monday, for the 2013 City Securities Hall of Fame Classic. The tournaments will take place Friday, Dec. 27 and Saturday, Dec. 28 at the New Castle Chrysler Fieldhouse.

The Greensburg boys basketball team, which won the Class 3A State Championship Saturday in overtime, will compete Dec. 28 against Mt. Vernon (Fortville) in the semifinal at 11 a.m. Greensburg defeated Mt. Vernon 62-37 in the State Semifinal March 16. It will be Greensburg’s first appearance in either the boys or girls classic.

The Pirates will return all five starters from Greensburg’s record-setting 26-1 championship team. Winners of 49 of their past 51 games, the Pirates spent the majority of the last two years as the top-ranked team in the AP’s Class 3A poll.

Columbus North and Evansville Harrison will compete in the semifinal following the first game. The consolation game will tip off at 6 p.m., and the championship game will follow.

On the boys side, 12 participating teams have gone on to win their state championship, with five more finishing as state runner-up that season.

The prestigious event will be the 37th edition for the boys.

In the girls’ 30th Classic tournament Friday, Dec. 27, Rushville will play Homestead at 11 a.m. and Bedford North Lawrence will play Pike in the second semifinal. The consolation game will be at 6:07 p.m. and the champiionship game will follow.

Selecting from the best teams in the state, the girls’ tournament has included 16 teams that went on to win a state championship that season, including nine state champions and five state runner-up teams in the past 11 years alone.

According to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, tickets for the tournaments will be available through participating schools and the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in the 2013-14 school year.
