Greensburg — The Greensburg varsity tennis team’s Senior Night win Tuesday over visiting Whiteland was meaningful not just for the three upperclassmen being honored.

Greenburg (7-7) defeated a tough Whiteland team 3-2 on a night it honored seniors Kaeli Fong, Bindi Patel and Ella Westhafer.

After the match, the tennis squad sang Happy Birthday to head coach Gary Bailey after giving the victory to him for a gift.

At first singles, Danielle Schroeder beat Emily Zietlow 6-1, 6-3.

“Danielle was as focused as I have seen her this year,” said Bailey.

Kaeli Fong beat Madison Scott 6-3, 6-3 at second singles.

“Kaeli just played another of her solid matches,” added Bailey.

Claire Welage dropped a close match to Laiken Gossett 6-4, 6-5.

“Claire Welage was hitting the ball well, but just could not get enough of the big points,” noted Bailey.

With Greensburg up 2-1 overall, it was left to the doubles to get the third and final needed point to wrap up the match.

That point came at second doubles, where Olivia Slusher and Tiffany Springmeyer “played a very good match” and beat Catherine Morgan and Allie Sontag 6-4, 6-4.

“Tiffany stepped up and played very well for her first varsity match,” said Bailey.

At first doubles, Courtney Nelson and Caroline Pratt battled back from a bad start and nearly won, according to Bailey. They lost in a long three-set match, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5, to Ashton Newman and Becca Stanley.

“A point here and there and that match is won by us,” Bailey added.

Bailey commented on the three seniors after the match.

“They are three really nice girls,” he said. “They provided great leadership. The girls really look up to them and admire them.”

The lone junior varsity win belonged to the doubles team of Mackenzie Kovacich and Kate Bausback.

Greensburg will host the EIAC tournament Saturday at 9 a.m.

Next for the Lady Pirate netters is the Sectional tournament, which begins next Wednesday, May 15 at Greensburg.
