A 10-run third inning marred by five errors led to the South Decatur softball team’s 18-2 loss to Eastern Hancock Thursday night.
The game started out uneventfully for head coach Lisa Huff’s Lady Cougars. The Royals loaded the bases in the first inning, but South did not allow a run.
South was getting ready to bat in the bottom of the first inning when lightning delayed the game.
When the Royals batted in the top of the third, the wheels fell off for the Lady Cougars. Five South errors contributed to a 10-run third inning for Eastern Hancock.
South, though, answered with their own . Courtney Billingsley hit a two-out triple, and Brittany Koors singled her in.
Senior RayAnn Noble later singled to spark a third-inning rally. Noble stole second base, then third, and Lizzie Hedger drove her in with a single.
The Royals, though, added a run in the fourth and seven more in the fifth on four more South errors.
“We hit the ball better than we’ve been hitting,” said Huff. “We just had to cut back on the old errors.”
Hedger gave up just seven hits and six earned runs, striking out three batters.
On South’s hitting ledger, Noble went 2-for-3. Billingsley hit a triple and Clarissa Baltus hit a double. Julia Miller also added to the hit column.
South hosts Shawe Memorial Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. and conference opponent Morristown Thursday.
