The South Decatur baseball team opened the season Thursday with a 9-6 loss to Batesville, despite a late-inning comeback.
The host Bulldogs, who led 7-0 after four innings, carried a 9-1 lead into the seventh inning. The Cougars scored five runs to climb within three, but the Bulldogs were able to hold off the threat for the win.
Senior Taylor Campos went 2-for-4 with a double and a run batted in to lead South. Junior Taylor Kopplin drove in a team-high two runs, hitting 1-for-3.
Senior Connor Hermesch also drove in a run and scored, with a sacrifice fly.
Also recording a hit were senior Matthew Gatewood and freshman Brendan Henderson.
Scoring a run apiece were senior Byron Balser, who reached via base-on-balls, Campos, Hermesch, sophomore Luke Ryle, Henderson and freshman Baker Howard.
Gatewood suffered the loss as the starter, and Westerfeld recorded the win on the mound for Batesville.
South committed seven errors, while Batesville committed three.
The Cougars return to the home diamond Tuesday with a Mid-Hoosier Conference opener against Waldron at 4:30 p.m. South travels to Indian Creek Wednesday for an MHC matchup at 5 p.m.
