Greensburg Daily News
The Greensburg boys track and field team returns a core of competitors who look forward to making advancements into the regional and state tournaments this spring.
Boys head coach Mike Myers said the return of athletes from injury will only enhance competition that the coaches have encouraged in the season’s first couple weeks.
Lost to graduation are state qualifier Lance Hunter in the pole vault, Tucker Hime, an Academic All-State hurdler, and Blake Abplanalp, a sprinter and long jumper.
According to Myers, 30 boys are out for the team this season. The key returners are state qualifier Sean Sellers in the high jump, regional qualifier Colin Evans (discus), and key contributors Peter Myers and Ryan Martin (shot put).
Myers said daily improvement and strong showings in the postseason meets are the boys’ top goals.
“We want to give our best daily and improve daily,” he said. “We always want to be on top of the county and be a key scoring team in the EIAC and Sectional. Individually, we want to see our team producing All-Conference performers and Regional Qualifiers. It would be great to continue to see state qualifiers.”
Greensburg anticipates scoring several points in field events this year. Sellers returns from his 6-foot-7 mark last season, qualifying him for semi-state.
“Sean has a goal of returning to the state meet and placing so that will be a key individual to watch all year,” said Myers.
The Pirates have experienced throwers expected to make strong performances, including senior Colin Evans in the discus, and seniors Peter Myers and Ryan Martin in the shot put.
“Our throwers want to claim the top marks at the conference and Coach Ruble has them all working well,” said Myers. “The competition for the varsity spots will be competitive all season.”
Senior Dustin McReynolds returns to pole vault in his senior campaign.
The team’s seniors are Ethan Amburgey (academic All-State last year), Luke Anderson, Averi Fultz, Colin Evans, Ryan Martin, Chase McCreary, Dustin McReynolds, Pete Myers and Shane Ploeger (academic All-State last year).
The juniors are David Booker, Logan Combs and Dillon Mirick.
Greensburg’s sophomores are Dillon Able, Kevin Beaver, Nathan Hayes, Cody McConnell, Jeremy Meadows and Jonathan Richards.
The team’s freshmen are Michael Back, Scott Dorsett, Alex Martinez, Matt Navarra, Jose Rosales, Francis Teague and Logan Yeager.
The team manager is Aaron Brooks.
Several seniors are expected to fulfill leadership roles and score the majority of points for Greensburg.
Myers called Evans a “big scorer for the team” when he returns to full health. Evans has been nursing a leg injury in early meets that has kept him from competing.
Senior Chase McCreary also looks to pick up points in the 400-800 area.
“This will be a total team effort all season,” said Myers. “Once everyone gets going and gets healthy, we will likely have some unknowns stepping up.”
Myers said versatility will keep the competition high in several events.
“We have many versatile runners that can contribute in the 400- and 800-meter area,” he said. “We also have some nagging injuries and athletes who are getting healthy, so these first meets we will be shuffling the lineups in our relays and individual races. The big idea that we need to see is how will these guys compete against other competition. We need to see who will step up and race.”
Myers noted a few meets in particular that the athletes are looking forward to.
“Decatur Central (April 12) is always a pivotal night for our team as they see great competition from the Indy Metro area,” he said. “We always want to perform well in our home Invites and the county meet. We need to see our kids giving their best and working hard to perform at their optimal level in mid-May.”
The Lawrenceburg Relays (April 16), Decatur Central Invite, East Central Invite (April 25), and Greensburg Invite (April 27) are on the docket for Greensburg.
North Decatur will host the County Meet, scheduled for April 30. The Greensburg boys and the North girls won the county meet last spring.
The EIAC meet is set for May 9 at East Central. The boys sectional is May 16 at East Central, while the regional is May 23 at Connersville. The State tournament is June 1 at Indiana University.
