Pirate JV softball tops Batesville 19-10

Greensburg — The Greensburg junior varsity softball team rebounded from a season-opening loss to defeat Batesville 19-10 Thursday in an error-filled slugfest.

Greensburg piled up 16 hits and committed eight errors, while Batesville tallied seven hits and five errors.

Whitney Tallent (1-1) earned the winning decision, while Allie Litzinger (1-1) took the loss.

Leading hitters for Greensburg were Tallent with three hits, including a double and her first home run of the year. Renea Kramer had two hits, including a triple. Also adding two hits were Allie Geis, Kelsey Fischer and Chanda Workman. Maddy Schroeder chipped in with a double, Becca Koors, Macie Kaiser, Katie Koors and Paige Clemons all chipped in with singles. Katie Bennett and Rebecca Caddell, Nicole Ploeger also played to round out the team stats.

Tallent allowed seven hits, 10 runs and only six of the 10 runs were earned. She walked three batters and struck out eight.

The JV team opened the season against visiting South Dearborn Tuesday. The visiting Knights beat the Pirates 14-3.

Coming off a 12-7 season last year, the current squad will be much younger as 11 of the 14 players are freshmen.

South Dearborn did most of their scoring Tuesday within a three-inning span, with seven in the second, two in the fourth and five in the fifth.

Greensburg scored two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.

The Knights tallied nine hits and committed one error, while Greensburg tallied seven hits and five errors.

The Pirates were led in hitting by Maddy Schroeder with two hits. Katie Bennett, Kelsie Fischer, Whitney Tallent, Allie Geis and Becca Koors all chipped in singles.

Head coach Russell Wilhoit said Tallent, pitching in her first high school game, “did a very good job.” He said she only allowed nine hits and just seven earned runs, while walking four batters and striking out three.

“She has a bright future,” said Wilhoit of Tallent.

Wilhoit credited his team with showing competitiveness from start to finish.

“Even though the Lady Pirates were behind the whole game,” he said, “they never gave up and put in a great effort against a good team, and will continue to get better each game.”

Greensburg next plays Saturday at Columbus East in a doubleheader, with games at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The Lady pirates JV are coached by Wilhoit and his assistant coach is Brian Dodson.
