Lady Pirates start 3-1 on diamond

Columbus — The Greensburg varsity softball team has compiled a three-game winning streak after falling to South Dearborn in the season opener. The Lady Pirates hit their stride with a double-header sweep of Columbus East Saturday, winning 4-1 and 18-5.

Juinor Alli Phillips pitched a complete game in the first outing. Phillips allowed just six hits, a walk and struck out two batters.

Senior Audrey Geis led Greensburg at the plate. Geis went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a single and a walk, scoring three of the four Pirate runs.

Freshman Britney Biltz went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a single, (2 RBI’s). Biltz scored the final run. Sophomore Megan Schmidt had a single and one RBI, and Alli Phillips added a double.

The Lady Pirates broke out for double digits in runs and hits for an 18-5 game two win.

Alli Phillips pitched six innings, while sophomore Emma Wolter came in and pitched one inning. Greensburg pitching gave up 11 hits, walked two, and struck out one.

“Offensively, the bats came alive,” said head coach Jake Shook.

Biltz went 5-for-5 at the plate with seven RBI’s. Senior Clare Owens, senior Shelby Ward, Phillips, Schmidt, and freshmen Kalynne Asche and Keauna Schultz, all recorded two hits. Geis recorded one hit and two runs in game two. Junior Chelsea Hersley recorded one hit and three walks.

Shook also applauded the defense behind Phillips’ pitching.

“We settled in on defense this weekend,” he said. “We turned a double play in both games and we only had three errors on defense through 64 batters we faced.”

Senior Audrey Geis and freshman Britney Biltz had a good weekend for the Lady Pirates at the plate. Geis went 4-for-8 with five runs and Biltz went 8-for-9 with six RBI’s.

“We are pleased with week one of the season,” said Shook of Greensburg’s 3-1 record and 1-1 mark in the Easter Indiana Athletic Conference.

Greensburg stays busy with five games this week. The Lady Pirates travel to Connersville tonight (Tuesday), host Jennings County on Thursday, host Jac-Cen-Del on Friday, and travel to Warren Central for an invitational on Saturday.
