Lady Pirates unable to finish off Knights

Greensburg — The Greensburg varsity girls basketball team fell to visiting South Dearborn 34-28 Thursday, allowing the Lady Knights to record a decisive comeback victory in a makeup game.

The Lady Pirates led 9-2 out of the gate, and 11-6 after the first quarter. The Pirates went on a 7-4 run to close the half, led by 10 points from sophomore Jessica Banaschak.

The momentum swung back into the Knights’ favor in the second half as the visitors outscored Greensburg 7-1 in the third quarter and 17-8 in the fourth. Despite an 8-1 run fueled by four points from senior Clare Owens, the visitors outrebounded the Pirates and held on for the win.

Banaschak led all scorers with 13 points. Owens and junior Joanna Redelman followed with seven apiece, while senior Shelby Ward chipped in one.

Greensburg is now 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference, while South Dearborn is 4-6 overall and 2-3 in the EIAC.

JV Lady Pirates fall to Knights

The Greensburg junior varsity team fell to the Knights 36-34 Thursday. Greensburg led 6-3 after the first eight minutes and 14-9 at halftime. The Pirates pulled away further, outscoring the Knights 13-8 in the third. However, South Dearborn stormed ahead in the fourth with a 19-7 surge after trailing 27-17 going into the final period.

Keauna Schultz led Greensburg with 11 points, including a trio of free throws. Kalynne Asche followed with 10 points, while Kasey Moeller added six. Asche and Moeller each shot 2-for-2 from the foul line. Megan Schmidt scored five, including a trio at the line. Maddy Schroeder chipped in two points.

The JV Pirates shot 10-for-16 (62.5 percent) from the foul line.
