Pirates take matchup of aces against South

The Greensburg baseball team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 6-0 win over visiting South Decatur Monday afternoon.

The county rivals featured their top pitchers, with senior Luke Kane going for the Pirates and Valparaiso-bound senior Matthew Gatewood on the mound for the Cougars.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the second inning, when Greensburg scratched across a run in each of the next two frames. The Pirates added three runs in the fourth.

State-ranked Greensburg (4-0) extended the lead in the fifth. Burcham and Rigney each reached on singles, and Burcham advanced to third. Holdsworth hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Burcham.

Kane pitched five innings for the win, allowing six hits and walking three batters. He struck out six. Billieu pitched two innings of three-hit, one-strikeout ball.

Junior Macy Holdsworth hit two sacrifice flies for the Pirates. Rigney hit 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Sophomore Josiah Buell added a hit and a run, while Holdsworth drove in two runs. Meadows added an RBI and a run.

Greensburg head coach Scott Holdsworth said the matchup gave Greensburg a possible preview of challenges it might face in future tournament games.

“I was very pleased with some phases of our game,” said Holdsworth. “We were challenged in the early portion of the game. South Decatur has a real good team. That’s an excellent opportunity for our guys to see that, and a chance to grow and have a look at what we’ll see down the road.”

South (3-2) out-hit the Pirates 6-4, but struggled to collect hits with runners in scoring position. Greensburg turned two late double plays to quiet Cougar rallies.

Gatewood suffered the loss on the mound, recording four strikeouts in four innings. Senior Connor Hermesch pitched in relief, striking out two batters in two innings.

Gatewood led South at the plate, hitting 3-for-3. Damen Martin hit 2-for-3 with a double, and senior Taylor Campos hit 2-for-4. Junior Taylor Kopplin and Aaron Haley each added a single, while Austin Petro reached on a hit-by-pitch.

South head coach Andy Seegers said he was pleased with his team’s approach against a quality team, but noted the need to take advantage of opportunities.

Greensburg travels to East Central tomorrow (Thursday) to open conference action at 5 p.m., while South travels to Milan for a 4:30 p.m. game.
