Greensburg Daily News
The Greensburg girls tennis team competed in the eight-team Shelbyville Invitational Saturday.
Teams that competed included Greensburg, Shelbyville, Batesville, Franklin County, Seymour, Mooresville and Triton Central.
None of the Lady Pirates won their respective matches, but returned consolation wins at two positions.
At first singles, sophomore Danielle Schroeder lost to Megan Fitzpatrick of Mooresville, 6-1, 6-0. Head coach Gary Bailey noted that Fitzpatrick was a “very good player.” Schroeder, though, defeated Michelle Gardner of Triton Central, 6-1, 6-1.
At second singles, senior Kaeli Fong defeated Triton Central’s Brittany Miller, 6-0, 6-1. Fong lost to Shelbyville’s Maddie Clark 6-2, 4-6, 10-3.
She played a great first round,” said Bailey of Fong. “She faced a player with a very unorthodox style, which is frustrating to play, and kind of outlasted Kaeli.”
Junior Claire Welage defeated Kelly Hunt of Franklin County, 7-5, 6-1, at third singles.
“Claire got off to a slow start, then turned it on,” said Bailey. “She played very well.” Welage then lost to a Mooresville player 6-4, 6-4.
“She played a good player, got behind, and could never get out front,” said Bailey of Welage’s second round.
Sophomores Courtney Nelson and Caroline Pratt at first doubles, lost to Batesville’s Emily Helvie and Ali Meyer 7-6, 6-0.
However, Nelson and Pratt bounced back and beat Shelbyville 6-1, 7-5 in the consolation.
“They played a good first round against Batesville,” said Bailey. “That doubles team is one of the best around. Batesville turned it around on them.”
At second doubles, freshman Abby Bailey and sophomore Olivia Slusher lost to a good Seymour squad 6-0, 6-2.
In the consolation match, Coach Bailey matched freshman Mackenzie Kovacich and sophomore Sydney Reynolds against Batesville’s Kelli Hartman and Brooke Bradford. The Greensburg duo fell 6-0, 6-1.
“The second doubles had a bad draw,” said Coach Bailey, “an unlucky draw.”

The Greensburg girls tennis team fell 5-0 to visiting Columbus East Monday.
Sophomore Danielle Schroeder lost to Ashlee Hasson 6-0, 6-1, at first singles.
Senior Kaeli Fong lost to Megan Galle at second singles, 6-1, 6-0.
“She’s the best player we’ve seen at any position all year long,” said Coach Bailey of Galle.
Sydney Reynolds lost to Risa Mineno 6-0, 6-0.
At first doubles, Nelson and Pratt lost to Lauren Champion and Alexa Husmann-Miller 6-2, 7-6. The duo was the last spot to step off the court.
Abby Bailey and Slusher lost to Amanda Hashimoto and Amanda Sun 6-0, 6-1.
Coach Bailey said the results showed the differences between Monday’s teams, but he is confident his team took something away from the loss.
“We’re young and inexperienced,” he said. “I just hope we’re learning every match, and I think we are.”
Junior Kate Bausback and freshman Kelly Meyer lost in JV singles.
Senior Ella Westhafer and Mackenzie Kovacich, and juniors Tori Giddings and sophomore Tiffany Springmeyer, lost in doubles.
Greensburg’s match against Batesville Tuesday afternoon was rained out.
