The Greensburg boys varsity golf team competed in the Bob Spacey Noblesville Invitational at Fox Prairie Golf Course Saturday.
According to head coach Bryce Mize, the Pirates’ team score of 324 was good enough for a 10th place finish out of the 24 competing teams. Hamilton Southeastern came away on top with a score of 297.
Medalist for the tournament was Chase Campbell of Hamilton Southeastern with an even-par 71. He won the individual title after a 3-way playoff.
Greensburg’s top finisher was sophomore Keegan McCullough with a 4-over 75. That score earned him a tie for 8th place in a field of 120 golfers. Sophomore Maverick Jones’ eight-over 78 earned him a tie for 24th place. Also scoring for the Pirates were Sam Marsh 83 and Cody Bausback 88. Reid Domingo shot a 98.
“I was extremely proud of the way we played today,” said Coach Mize. “When you go to an invitational and compete against some of the best schools in the Indianapolis area, you know you’re going to have a lot of great competition. I couldn’t be more excited about a top-10 finish. It’s by far the best we have done in that tournament in my 3 years as the Greensburg coach.”
Mize described the performances of the golfers afterward.
“Keegan played terrific all day,” said Mize. “He was 1-under after nine and continued to be in contention throughout the back nine. He knows that he gave some shots away, but overall it was a great tournament for him. Maverick also played extremely well. He was 1-over after nine, and finished very well down the stretch after back-to-back double bogeys on 11 and 12. Sam was frustrated with his score, but I know he’ll bounce back. He just had a hard time getting things going on the back nine. A score in the low-80s is still a great score. I was also happy for Cody Bausback. It was his first time playing this course, and a score of 88 was a good showing.”
Greensburg continues play this week.
“Like I stated last week, we still haven’t hit our stride, and that’s a very exciting thing,” noted Mize. “We’ll look to keep things going this week with 3 matches - two against conference rivals.”
