The South Decatur varsity baseball team bounced back with a run-rule victory Monday against Southwestern (Shelby).
The Cougars beat the Spartans 12-2 in five innings.
South jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning, and scored four more times in the third inning to go ahead 6-0.
The Spartans got on the board in the fourth inning with a run, and added another in the fifth. However, South had scored six times in a big fourth inning to claim a 12-1 lead.
Senior Taylor Kopplin tallied the victory on the mound, pitching the complete game and allowing just three hits.
South tallied eight hits, let by freshman Hunter Seegers’ grand slam home run. Seegers hit 4-for-4 with five runs batted in, and scored twice.
Aaron Haley went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run, and Austin Petro added a double.
The Cougars played error-free defense, while the Spartans committed four errors.
