Pirates top Spartans

The Greensburg varsity softball team swept Connersville in a double-header, winning 19-6 and 8-7.

The Lady Pirates improve to 12-3 on the season with a 26-hit attack Saturday. Greensburg tallied 17 hits in a 19-6 win, aided by three Spartan errors.

Freshman Sydney Meyer started the game with a single, and junior Megan Schmidt reached on an error to score Meyer. Sophomore Britney Biltz then singled to score Schmidt. Freshman starter Haylee Owens doubled and sophomore Keauna Schultz reached on an error to score Biltz. Junior Emma Wolter courtesy ran for Schultz and stole second, and junior Chelsea Hersley plated Owens on a fielder’s choice to make it 4-0. Senior Alli Phillips walked, and freshman Gabby Burton doubled to score Wolter. Phillips then scored on a groundout by junior Kalynne Asche to cap the six-run start.

The Spartans cut the lead in half, 6-3 in the bottom of the first, but Greensburg scored two more. Hersley’s single scored Moeller and Wolter in the top of the second.

Burton scored on a passed ball in the third, and Schmidt drove a home run to score Meyer that made it 11-3. Hersley then scored on a fielder’s choice by Whitney Tallent.

Junior Kalynne Asche made it 14-6 with a two-run double that scored Hersley and Moeller in the sixth. Owens scored Schmidt on a groundout, and Keauna Schultz capped the scoring with a two-run home run that plated Britney Biltz.

Owens allowed three earned runs in six innings, striking out four batters.

Hersley had a big day at the plate, leading Greensburg with a 3-for-4 effort and three RBI with two runs. Asche drove in three runs and scored, while Biltz hit 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. Owens hit 2-for-5 with an RBI. Wolter scored twice as a courtesy runner.

A three-run fourth inning and a two-run seventh propelled the Lady Pirates over the Spartans 8-7. The play of the game was sophomore Keauna Schultz’s two-run home run that scored Owens, providing the insurance Greensburg needed in the top of the seventh.
