South Decatur senior Taylor Kopplin had everything working for him Thursday night against Trinity Lutheran.
Kopplin pitched a no-hitter to lead the host Cougars to a 3-0 win, posting a career-high 13 strikeouts in seven innings.
“Taylor threw great tonight,” said South head coach Andy Seegers of the Cougars’ top pitcher. “He had them off all night. They never could get timed with him. His off-speed pitches were on command. That was his game. He dominated.”
The Cougars scored all three runs in the fourth inning. Senior Austin Ortman led off with a single. South manufactured its first run with sacrifice bunts by freshman Oakley Billingsley and junior Damen Martin to advance Ortman to third. Senior Chris Johannigman then drove Ortman home with a single. Johannigman stole second, and scored on a dropped fly ball to right field off the bat of sophomore Brendan Henderson. Freshman Hunter Seegers then hit a double to score Henderson, making it 3-0.
Ortman and Johannigman each went 2-for-3 with a run. Seegers went 1-for-2 with a double.
South improves to 6-7 on the season, according to Coach Seegers. The Cougars have won two straight games.
“The whole team is starting to come on,” said Seegers. “That’s good to see here late in the season come sectional time.”
