Greensburg — The Greensburg varsity tennis team, hosting the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference tournament, fared well Thursday afternoon against EIAC rivals.
“As a team, we had a very good start to the EIAC tourney,” said Greensburg head coach Gary Bailey.
At first singles, junior Danielle Schroeder, the top seed, defeated Sydney Romines of Lawrenceburg 6-0, 6-1.
At second singles, junior second seed Olivia Slusher topped Franklin County’s Lauren Mohr 6-2, 6-0.
Junior Tiffany Springmeyer at third singles fell to second-seed Sophia Imeroni of East Central, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 in a hard-fought match.
“I thought all three singles spots played very well,” said Bailey. “Tiffany Springmeyer got a tough draw, but I thought she played very well in her match. I am quite proud of her.”
At first doubles, the top-seeded duo of senior Claire Welage and junior Caroline Pratt defeated Rushville’s Jill Yeager and Casey Yeager 6-2, 6-2.
At second doubles, junior Courtney Nelson and sophomore Abby Bailey topped Kayla Barrett and Cheyenne Burress of South Dearborn 6-2, 6-0.
“Both doubles teams came out and took care of business in the cold and windy conditions,” said Coach Bailey, who said he looks forward to the next rounds. The tournament continues Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
