Pirate 8A boys record two wins

Greensburg Daily News

Greensburg — The Greensburg 8A boys basketball team traveled to Rushville Monday and came out with a very tough 4-point win, 41-37.

The Pirates started the game very slow and fell behind 12-2 at one point. Dillon Merritt’s 3-pointer cut the deficit to 7 and was a huge swing in momentum offensively. Greensburg finished the second quarter strong and cut the lead to a 3-point game, 19-16 at half.

Rushville started off the second half on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 12. Once again, though, the kids did not give and chipped away at the lead to even the quarter with Rushville leading 31-28. The difference in the game was the fourth quarter as the Pirates outscored Rushville 13-6 to close out the game.

“I was extremely proud of how our team reacted after being down and overcoming adversity tonight,” said head coach Andrew Ruble.

Dillon Merritt led Greensburg with 14 points, Greg Schroader 12, Brent Bowling 7, Chase Hogg 5, and Trevor Reynolds with 3. Merritt led the team with 7 rebounds and Chase Hogg provided a huge spark off the bench with a season-high 7 assists. Chancey Holdsworth and Louis Moore recorded two steals each. Harlan Dolan tallied 2 rebounds. Ruble said Sam Slusher and Kamron Sims provided excellent defense.

This was a total team win,” added Ruble. The Pirates are now (2-7) and visit Batesville Jan. 7 for a 5:30 tipoff.

Pirates top South for first win

The Pirates traveled to South Decatur last week and came away with a 35-25 win.

“This win was huge for us because we have played in a few close games, but have not been able to close them out,” said coach Ruble. “I was proud how the kids learned from those previous games and finished strong tonight.”

Greensburg led 10-3 after the first quarter, and kept a 5-point advantage at the half. Greensburg rallied for a couple 3-point shots in the third quarter to extend the lead and hold off a South comeback. Leading the Pirates in scoring was Greg Schroeder with 14 points, including 3-for-4 from the 3-point line; Dillon Merritt 6, Chancey Holdsworth 5 (1-for-2 on three’s), Trevor Reynolds 4, Louis Moore 4, and Chase Hogg 2 points.

Holdsworth recorded five steals, Schroeder and Hogg led the team with three assists each, and Reynolds brought down five rebounds.
