North linksters host tri meet

Greensburg — The North Decatur and Greensburg boys golf teams opened the season Thursday night with a tri-meet against Jennings County.

Jennings County took the meet at North Branch Golf Course, edging Greensburg 160-164. North shot a 174 for third place. The Panthers’ Blake Ralston was the meet medalist with a 37.

Sam Marsh and Maverick Jones each led Greensburg with a 40. Senior Tyler Reiger and Cody Bausback each shot a 42. Reid Domingo carded a 47, while Keegan McCullough shot a 48.

“For our first outing of the year, I was very pleased with our scores tonight,” said second-year Greensburg coach Bryce Mize. “Sam and Maverick played terrific, and Tyler and Cody also got their seasons started on a good note. Once we were able to shake off those beginning-of-the-year nerves, we played extremely well. Watching this team compete tonight made me ecstatic about our outlook for the season.”

Greensburg’s returning varsity golfers are senior Tyler Reiger, junior Sam Marsh, and sophomore Cody Bausback.

In-coming freshman to look out for are Maverick Jones, Keegan McCullough, Reid Domingo and Brandon Butz.

Other players to keep an eye on are junior Tyler Merritt, sophomore Michael Blankman, junior Jake Hellmich, senior Bill Neumeier, senior Corey Dennett, and junior Kyle Colson.

Reiger and Marsh, according to Mize, are bringing back a lot of experience and leadership. Bausback will look to improve upon his promising freshman campaign, and four freshmen will compete to fill the varsity squad.

“We also have some upperclassmen who have been improving daily, and will push to claim a varsity spot,” said Mize. “I definitely look for this team to improve from last season.”

Senior Thomas Shobe, a regional qualifier last year, led North Decatur with a 41. Nick Stewart and Dayne Lecher each shot a 44, while Brennan Coy carded a 45. Charlie Murray (50) and Trevor Crites (52) rounded out the scoring for North.

Greensburg is 1-1 on the season, while North is 0-2.

“We got our feet wet tonight and played fairly well,” said North head coach Dan Borns. “We’ll keep trying to improve every meet.”

North hosts Rushville Friday for a 4:30 p.m. dual meet against the Lions at North Branch. Greensburg next hosts Lawrenceburg Tuesday.
