North baseball opens under new coach

Greensburg — The North Decatur baseball team hosted Cambridge City Lincoln for its season opener Thursday under a new head coach.

The Chargers fell 11-7 despite a late-inning rally and a chance to pull out a win.

Gary Brown, North’s assistant principal, takes over as skipper of a squad that returns most of its key players. Previously a coach at New Castle, Brown continues his coaching tenure after a short introductory period to start the spring.

The weather finally cooperated, and the Chargers hit the field after the opener against Oldenburg Academy had been cancelled.

North Thursday trailed 5-2 early, then 11-2 before mounting a comeback attempt. Highlighting a seven-inning turn at the plate were runs by Will Jarman and Dustin Westerfeld, and senior Kevin Geis reached on a hit-by-pitch. Seth Gauck, North’s catcher, drove in Geis with a double between the outfielders, and Gauck scored on an error.

Senior Jason Kirchhoff led North with two singles and a run.

Also scoring were Westerfeld, Gauck, Geis and Donovan Meyer, who added a stolen base while starting at shortstop.

North drew seven Cambridge City walks on the night.

Coach Brown noted that North is only in its second week of baseball, following bad weather that has affected several teams.

“This is our fourth day out,” he said. “Two of the previous three days were on the field.”

Austin Brown played second base, Geis played third base, and Kirchhoff was the starting pitcher and later took over at shortstop. Alex Crowe played first base. Around the outfield were Jarman (left), Westerfeld (center) and White (right).

Brown applauded his team for refusing to lose heart near the end and continuing to make adjustments at the plate.

“I was pretty proud with the way the kids were battling at the end,” he said. “They were starting to swing the bat real well.”

North hosts Brown County Tuesday at 5 p.m.
