The South Decatur varsity baseball team defeated conference rival Indian Creek 13-2 Wednesday on the road.
The Cougars powered their way to a second victory in Mid-Hoosier Conference play. South provided senior left-handed pitcher Matthew Gatewood 13 runs of support on 10 hits. Gatewood got South on the board first with a solo home run. He and senior Connor Hermesch hit home runs as South jumped out for nine runs after the first four innings. South scored four runs in each of the third, fourth and sixth frames.
Indian Creek mustered just one hit, scoring two runs in the fifth.
Gatewood, who improved to 1-1 on the mound, finished 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI’s and three runs. Hermesch went 1-for-4 with three RBI’s, while senior Taylor Campos went 2-for-3 with two RBI’s. Austin Petro went 2-for-3 and scored twice, while junior Taylor Kopplin contributed a double.
South improves to 2-1 on the season and 2-0 in the MHC. The Cougars next play a double-header with the junior varsity team Saturday. South hosts Brown County for a 10 a.m. game, and the junior varsity squads play at 2:30 p.m.
