Greensburg Daily News

Greensburg — The Greensburg boys varsity golf team defeated Shelbyville Thursday on Senior Night.

According to head coach Bryce Mize, it also was the first-ever match play event. The final score of the nine head-to-head matches was 6.5 to 2.5.

“We celebrated and gave thanks to Tyler Reiger, Bill Neumeier, and Corey Dennett prior to the match,” said Mize.

Sam Marsh won 3 and 2 in the number one match.

“He had a rough second hole, but he was really able to get things going after that,” said Mize.

Tyler Reiger was defeated 1 down in the second match.

“It was a great battle between the number two’s,” said Mize. “Unfortunately, it slipped away from Tyler on the last hole.”

Greensburg earned victories in each of the next four matches. Keegan McCullough won 5 and 3, Maverick Jones won 1 up, Reid Domingo won 4 and 3, and Cody Bausback won 2 and 1.

Bill Neumeier finished the number seven match all square to earn a half point. Corey Dennett was defeated 3 and 2, and Michael Blankman was victorious 2 and 1.

“It was really interesting watching these guys play match play tonight,” said Mize. “It took on a completely different dynamic, and it was neat to see how the guys reacted. I think they were having a lot of fun out there being competitive. I think it really helped our guys focus on beating their opponent instead of being the best score. We play extremely well with that mindset.”

The Pirate linksters conclude the regular season Friday night against visiting Columbus East.

Pirates fall to Columbus North

The Pirates fell to Columbus North Tuesday, 149-166.

North’s Christian Fairbanks and Ian Smith, both carded a 1-over 36 for meet co-medalist honors.

The Pirates were led in scoring by the All-EIAC trio of Sam Marsh, senior Tyler Reiger, and Keegan McCullough, who all shot 41. The other utilized score was a 43 from Reid Domingo. Maverick Jones shot a 45.

The rest of the participants were included in the JV match. Scoring for the Pirates were Bill Neumeier (47), Michael Blankman (49), Brandon Butz (54), and Jake Hellmich (55). Cody Bausback’s score of 56 was due to a very tough ninth hole.

“Needless to say, we didn’t play our best golf tonight,” said coach Mize. “Whether it was the wind or the fact that we were playing one of the top teams in the state, we just didn’t bring it.  Our scores were still a lot lower than they were at the beginning of the season, but from what I’ve seen lately, we’re capable of doing better. Our scores were still respectable, but we just ran into a better team tonight.”
