Lady Chargers bumped in extra innings

Vevay — The North Decatur varsity softball team exited the postseason earlier than most had expected them to. The Lady Chargers fell to Milan 12-11 in an eight-inning slugfest in the Switzerland County Softball Sectional 45.

Milan out-hit North 18-13, but North enjoyed a lead for the first six innings. A four-run Milan seventh forced an extra inning, and the Lady Indians came away in the bottom of the eighth.

The Lady Chargers scored three runs top open the game. Milan tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom half, but North stayed ahead and added on a big five-spot in the fourth inning.

Securing an 11-7 lead entering the bottom of the seventh, North needed three outs to advance. However, Milan tied it with four runs to force the extra session, and won it with a run in the bottom of the eighth.

Junior Anna Wallpe led North with four runs batted in, a double and a grand slam home run. Junior Alison Wallpe followed with three RBI’s, including a double and a single, while freshman Morgan Nobbe drove in two. Freshman Kiley Stier hit four singles. Junior Myra Steele chipped in two singles, while senior Kyra Spears and freshman Mary Hughes each added one. Hughes added a double and an RBI.

Spears also drove in a run.

North committed four errors, while Milan committed two.

SB’s:  Stier 1.

HBP:  Steele 1, Hughes 1.

North finished a season head coach Sam Field said was much improved from the previous spring, despite starting several freshmen. North’s batting average rose from .240 to .322, and the fielding percentage improved from .840 to .900. North gave up nearly half as many runs, 101 this year and 201 last year.

North honors seniors

The Lady Chargers honored two seniors on a night North hosted Triton Central. North recognized Kyra Spears and Lindsay Nobbe. The Lady Chargers fell to Triton Central 7-1, despite a solid pitching outing by junior Myra Steele.

“We played a good ballgame against them,” said North head coach Sam Fields. “We didn’t play bad at all. I’m real happy with the way things are going. The seniors played real well, and everyone did.”

Steele gave up just three earned runs.

“Myra pitched another good game,” said Fields. “Myra had them off stride. They weren’t hitting like they normally do.”
