---- — The Greensburg girls swim team opened the season Thursday night with a big win, defeating visiting Shelbyville 101-66.
The Lady Pirates won 11 of 12 events, taking second place in the 50-yard freestyle.
Greensburg head coach Josh Hawkins said the meet went as well as he could have expected. Two swimmers achieved personal-bests and several others nearly broke their PR’s.
“Great performances,” he said. “That’s very telling to swim the best time this early. Tonight was a really good start to the season.”
Winning two events apiece were junior Molly Oesterling, sophomore Bri Stagge and sophomore Abby Bausback. All three relay teams were victorious, and the Lady Pirates went 1-2-3 in the 500-yard freestyle.
Bausback set a PR in the 100 backstroke (1:09.14) and Bri Stagge swam a PR in the 500 free (5:57.15).
“It’s not like they didn’t swim fast, either,” said Hawkins. “Setting a PR this early in the season, with three months still to swim, says a lot. Everyone was close to their PR.”
The 200-yard medley relay team opened Thursday’s action with a win. The quartet of senior Megan McDole, freshman Emily Eberhardt, Bausback and sophomore Alli Duerstock, recorded a time of 2:09.30.
The 200-yard freestyle relay of Oesterling, Eberhardt, Springmeyer and Bri Stagge, won with a time of 1:56.69. The 200 free relay ‘B’ team of McKinley Bottoms, senior Valeria Martinez, Ashley Koontz and junior Danielle Schroeder, took fourth (2:22.98).
The 400 free relay of Oesterling, McDole, Bausback and Bri Stagge, won in 3:13.95. The 400 free relay ‘B’ team of Koontz, senior Morgan Springmeyer, Schroeder and Duerstock, took third in 5:20.73.
Oesterling won the 200 free (2:17.95) and the 100 free (59.82). Junior Ashley Koontz took second in the 200 free (2:40.95) and freshman McKinley Bottoms was fourth (2:54.71).
McDole took second in the 500 free (6:53.39) and fourth in the 200 IM (2:50.78).
Bausback won the 100 fly in 1:10.14, while Valeria Martinez was fourth in 1:36.94.
Eberhardt won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:19.72 and took second in the 200 IM in 2:39.19.
Duerstock placed second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:23.06 and fourth in the 50 free in 31.12.
Morgan Springmeyer took fifth in the 100 breast in 1:38.
McKinley Bottoms took third in the 100 back.
Danielle Schroeder, a first-year swimmer, placed fifth in the 50 free (37.95) and fifth in the 100 free (1:25.82). Freshman Emma Overmyer clocked a time of 40.36 in the 50 free and 1:34.09 in the 100 free.
Greensburg’s girls compete in the Franklin Invitational Saturday, hosted by perennial state power Franklin Community. The invite will begin at 10 a.m.
“Hopefully that will bring out the competitiveness in the girls,” said Hawkins. “We’ll see what Saturday brings. I’m really excited about it.”
