The Redlegs 12 baseball Club recently participated in the Game Day USA tournament at Lincoln Park in Columbus. The Redlegs managed to put together a 3-2 weekend to claim runner-up honors.
The Redlegs opened tourney play with a 13-2 triumph over the Schiller Park Titans from Chicago. Seth Wilkerson and Aaron Greiwe combined to allow only two hits and zero earned runs. Kent Biehle was 2-for-3 with two RBI’s and Cooper Yancey was 2-for-2 with a triple and an RBI.
Game Two featured a classic pitcher’s duel between the Redlegs’ Conner Barkes and Ronnie Tunitis of the Mafia Red squad. Barkes allowed only one hit, but the one hit came from Tunitis with a runner on third, resulting in a 1-0 Mafia victory. Eric Million and Yancey had hits for the Redlegs, but the team never could cross the plate.
Game Three saw the Redlegs defeat the Mafia Black team 10-8. Joel Norman picked up the win on the mound, while Barkes had two doubles and an RBI. Greiwe and Million both had two RBI’s on base hits.
According to Redlegs Coach Jeff Greiwe, the most exciting game of the tournament had to be the Redlegs semi-final game in a rematch with the Mafia Red. The Mafia were winning 8-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth: three outs and the game is over. The Redlegs put together a dramatic comeback, scoring five times, two of them with two outs. Kyle Shaver’s RBI tied the game, and Yancey’s base hit up the middle scored Cody Wilson with the winning run.
That win set up the championship game against the Indiana Blazers 12. The bats of the Blazers proved too much for the depleted Redlegs, with the Blazers enjoying a 12-2 Championship win.
Redlegs compete in double-header
The Redlegs also participated in a three-team double-header with the Indiana Revolution and Jennings County Crush.
Game One pitted the Redlegs against the Revolution, resulting in 13-8 victory for the Revolution. “Sloppy play,” according to Coach Greiwe, allowed eight unearned runs to score for the visitors, but Eric Million did come in relief to provide two scoreless innings. Million also had a double, triple, and two RBI’s. Biehle went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI, and Greiwe added a double and RBI.
Game Two saw the Crush host the Redlegs, with the Redlegs coming out on top 13-1. Barkes, Greiwe, and Biehle provided the pitching, while Norman provided the offense with four RBI, three runs scored, two hits, and one stolen base. Devon Rodgers and Greiwe each had two RBI’s with base hits.
The Redlegs are now 12-8 on the season, and will be playing in Greensburg Spring Swing coming up May 18-19.
