Pirate JV baseball aims for EIAC

The Greensburg Pirates junior varsity baseball team traveled to Connersville to compete against the JV Spartans, losing 10-9. After losing a once 5-0 lead in the game, the Pirates found themselves tied 7-7 tie after seven innings, leading to extra innings. With a runner on third on and one out in the bottom of the ninth, the Spartans had a base hit to right field to win the game on the final swing. This is the second consecutive game the Pirates have lost on the final swing.

“We have had the privilege of playing in some very exciting games this season, but, as of late we haven’t been victorious in those games,” head coach Justin Tucker stated.

Offensively, the Pirates had seven hits in the nine-inning game, while taking four walks. Spencer Burkert and Nick Hughes led the team with two hits a piece, while Brandt Ricketts, Devon Workman, and Rhett Dwenger added one apiece. Ricketts, Evan Bailey, and Tyler Brown did a great job of pitching, according to Coach Tucker.

“In the end, while we did not come away with a victory, I think we learned many lessons from a game such as this and have continued to develop as baseball players.” added Tucker.

The Pirates traveled to Shelbyville to compete against the JV Golden Bears, losing 3-0. The Pirates struck out 11 times in the game. Offensively, the Pirates had only two hits in the game, while taking three walks. Juniors Colten Black, with a double, and Devon Workman, a single, had the two hits on the day. According to Tucker, Austin Kane and Brandt Ricketts did an excellent job pitching on the day.

“Although our season is getting close to concluding, I think we have learned a lot from both our wins and losses. I’d say we are prepared for our end of season tournament,” Coach Tucker said.

With the loss, the JV Pirates drop to 6-6 on the season, with an EIAC conference record of 3-1.
