Pirate netters win three EIAC matches

Greensburg — The Greensburg girls tennis team hosted the six-school Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference individual tournament Saturday.

Greensburg took third after winning three matches (3-2).

East Central went a perfect 5-0. Batesville went 4-2, followed by Franklin County (2-3), South Dearborn (1-4) and Lawrenceburg (0-5).

At first singles, Greensburg sophomore Danielle Schroeder drew a first-round bye. In the semifinal, Schroeder fell to Batesville’s Ellen Heppner 6-3, 3-6, 10-8.

Abby Sweeney of Batesville defeated Heppner 6-3, 6-4 for the first singles championship.

At second singles, Greensburg senior Kaeli Fong defeated Franklin County’s Jodi Barnes 6-0, 6-1 in the first round. Fong beat East Central’s Conner Struewing 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinal, but fell to Batesville’s Lydia Olsen 6-1, 6-2 in the championship match to go 2-1 on the day.

Greensburg junior Claire Welage went 1-1 at third singles. She topped South Dearborn’s Carrissa Flanagan 6-3, 6-2 in the first round, but fell to East Central’s Alyssa Defiglio 6-2, 6-7, 12-10 in a hard-fought semi-final match. Batesville’s Sarah Hoseus beat Defiglio 7-6(3), 6-2 in the championship.

Greensburg sophomores Caroline Pratt and Courtney Nelson went 1-1 at first doubles. Pratt and Nelson beat Franklin County’s Alicia Heis and Emma Stern 6-1, 6-0 in the first round, but fell to East Central’s Clare Struewing and Kelly Weigel 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinal. Struewing and Weigel beat Batesville’s Emily Helvie and Ali Meyer 2-6, 7-5, 10-6 in the championship.

The Greensburg second doubles team of freshman Abby Bailey and sophomore Olivia Slusher defeated South Dearborn’s Carly Ochs and Brianna Upton 6-4, 6-1. After Batesville’s Brooke Bradford and Kelli Hartman took a bye, Bailey and Slusher fell to the Bulldog duo 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinal.

While finishing 7-7 overall in the regular season, Greensburg also tallied a 3-2 conference record in the regular season.

Greensburg hosts the Sectional Tournament, which takes place Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
