North wins 18-6 on Senior Night

Chargers finish season strong

Greensburg — The North Decatur varsity baseball team won two of its last three games on the strength of potent offense and shutdown pitching.

North celebrated Senior Night Friday afternoon with an 18-6 run-ruled victory over Eastern Hancock in conference play.

“This was a good way to end our last home game of the season,” said head coach Gary Brown. “It will be remembered by all of our seniors, as they were recognized on Senior Night just prior to the game. This is a good group of kids who deserved this type of finish at home.”

The Chargers sent 20 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, and 14 scored. North had trailed 2-0 going into the home half, but the Chargers opened their at-bat with six straight hits. Austin Brown singled and scored on a passed ball. Seth Gauck hit a two-run double, and Kevin Geis singled. Donovan Meyer drove in Geis with a single to make it 5-2.

After Alex Crowe and Brown singles, Knecht drove them in with his own hit. Jason Kirchhoff walked and Gauck followed with a two-run single to make it 11-2.

North had batted around twice while recording just one out.

Alex Crowe pitched four innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs. Donovan Meyer pitched the last inning facing five hitters, two walks, striking out two and allowing no runs.

Offensively, North collected 18 hits. Mitch Knecht had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s.  Jason Kirchhoff had a double with 2 RBI’s, Austin Brown had 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s.  Seth Gauck had 3 hits with a double and 3 RBI’s. Kevin Geis had 3 hits with 2 RBI’s. Donovan Meyer had 3 hits and 1 RBI. Will Jarman had 3 hits and 2 RBI’s, and Alex Crowe had a hit with an RBI.

North fell to Jac-Cen-Del 10-9 despite a late-inning comeback Monday night.

“Even though we got beat tonight it was the best-played game we played all year,” said head coach Gary Brown. “We’re starting to gain a little bit of confidence, and starting to realize we can compete. That’s critical.”

North took a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning, but the Eagles scored four of their own to go up 4-2. The Eagles tacked on three more to go up 7-2, but North scored once in each of the next two innings to make it 7-4, then added a run in the sixth.

JCD scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, going up 9-5.

However, the Chargers rallied back to tie it in the seventh with a four-spot. Sophomore Seth Gauck highlighted the inning with a 2-run single with two outs to tie it.

The Eagles, though, ended it with a 2-out single in the bottom of the seventh to win it.

North ended up with seven hits. Senior Jason Kirchhoff recorded a triple and drove in two runs, as did Gauck. Senior Kevin Geis tallied a hit and an RBI. Recording a hit apiece were senior Mitch Knecht, Austin Brown, Donovan Meyer and Dustin Westerfeld.

Kirchhoff strikes out 13 in win

North beat Waldron Tuesday night 5-4.
