Pirates win 30-20 on Homecoming Night

Greensburg improves to 5-1

Greensburg — The Greensburg football team sent home fans and alumni alike happy Friday after a 30-20 Homecoming Night win over Franklin County. The Pirates improve to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference. Greensburg trailed

Senior Derek Chambers began the scoring on the first play from scrimmage with a 56-yard touchdown run. Senior Riley Billieu kicked a 22-yard field goal to extend the lead to 10-0. After the Wildcats pulled to within two at 10-8, senior Jack Eberhardt's acrobatic interception returned the possession back to the Pirates. Senior Elliott Green made it 16-8 at the 2:45 mark of the half, with a touchdown run inside the 20 yard line.

Despite a sack that led to a fourth down with 8.4 seconds left in the first half, the Wildcats again closed the gap with a scoring pass to senior Ben Wewe. The 2-point conversion was no good, though, and the half ended with the Pirates leading 16-14.

Franklin County took the lead in the third quarter, 20-16. Greensburg prevented another PAT attempt, assuring that its next score would put it back on top. The home team did indeed jump back out in front. After Eberhardt returned the kickoff to midfield, Greensburg broke through for a 23-20 edge.

Green's second touchdown from the 1 and through the pile made it 30-20 with Billieu's PAT.

The Pirates outgained the Wildcats offensively 309-255, unofficially, including 278 yards on the ground.

Junior quarterback Andy Meadows completed two of three passes for 31 yards, including a long completion to senior Justin Dance to sustain a first-half drive.

Several different Pirates made key, heads-up plays throughout the night. Greensburg senior Shane Ploeger held back a Franklin County player to enable sophomore Trenton Black to pick up a Wildcat fumble and return it 34 yards. The alert play helped set up Green's second touchdown of the night.

Rushing totals (unofficial):  Derek Chambers 114, Elliott Green 78, Ryan Martin 32, Andy Meadows 26, Trenton Black 16.

Greensburg visits 3-3 Batesville, which fell to Lawrenceburg 40-0, this Friday at 7 p.m.
