Young archers pull and release at Saturday exhibition match

Greensburg — On Saturday morning, members of the Greensburg Junior High School (GJHS) and the South Decatur Elementary School (SDES) archery teams lined up and released, competing in an exhibition match sponsored at SDES by the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and Greensburg’s Cutting Edge Sporting Goods.

Cutting Edge Owner Tim Stricker told the Daily News that the match was the smaller of two such matches the teams participated in Saturday, with the remainder of both squads participating in the second match in Tell City.

Among the Greensburg Junior High Pirate Archers, Hunter Carter took top honors in the boys category with a score of 259, while Zoie Rynard won in the girl’s category with a score of 256.

Orion Ingmire placed first in the boy’s category on the South Decatur Cougar Archers squad with a score of 270, while

Elizabeth Rigby took top honors in among the girls with a score of 226.

The winners received gold medallions.

Stricker stressed that the meet wasn’t a competition in the traditional sense, but rather, a way for the budding child archers to practice and have fun together.

Stricker also pointed out that the big winners on the day were the two respective schools: Cutting Edge donated $300 to each school, while the NWTF donated $500.

The archery programs at both schools are still relatively new, and Cutting Edge has been instrumental in helping both get off the ground.

SDES Principal Kara Holdsworth said her school’s archery program is important in that it attracts kids who might not otherwise participate in any other extra-curricular activities.

The two teams will next compete at the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) Nationals Competition May 9, in Louisville, Ky. For more information, call Cutting Edge Sporting Goods at (812) 560-4208.
