Pirate grapplers host Jennings County

Greensburg — The Greensburg varsity wrestling team hosted its first home meet of the season Tuesday against Jennings County. The Panthers defeated the Pirates 59-12.

The Panthers were able to win the toss-up matches and capitalize on Greensburg mistakes.

“Jennings County is a good team year in and year out,” said Pirate head coach Matt Cochran. “Their program is at a level of consistency that we are trying to build here. We are making improvements. I thought our guys wrestled better tonight then they have in a while, we just lost some toss up matches. This is the most competitive we have been against them in several years.”

Senior Justin Dance, junior Colten Black, and junior Drew Neisius all lost one-point matches for the Pirates.

Freshman Brandon Butz and sophomore Nathan Hayes recorded the only two wins for the Pirates. Hayes won a back-and-forth match against Jace Baldwin, where Hayes eventually won by pin in the third period. Butz dominated Jake Hammond with an early first-period pin.

“I was happy for Brandon,” said Cochran. “He had a lot of support from the crowd in his match and he wanted to perform well tonight. He did a great job.”

The next match for the varsity Pirates will be the Ben Davis Super 16 individual tournament on Dec. 29. The JV will be in action this Saturday at East Central.
