Pirate relays excel against Olympians

The Greensburg boys and girls swimming teams hosted Columbus East Tuesday night in a prelude to the sectional tournament.

The Aqua Lady Pirates were second to the Olympians 101-78, while the Greensburg boys also were second 125-56.

The Lady Pirates girls, who are tapering off in preparation for the postseason, won two of three relays. Morgan Stagge, Molly Oesterling, Abby Bausback, Bri Stagge combined in the winning 200 medley (2:09.38) and the 200 freestyle (1:52.10).

The girls ‘B’ team 200 medley relay of Ashley Koontz, Morgan Springmeyer, Megan McDole and Alli Duerstock, was fourth in 2:30.78.

The girls 400 free relay of Springmeyer, Koontz, Kaleigh McGinn and McDole, was third in 4:51.11.

Recording individual wins for the girls were Bri Stagge in the 200 (2:14.79) and 500 free (6:05.36); Bausback in the 100 backstroke (1:13.26) and 100 butterfly (1:13.31); Megan McDole in the 100 breaststroke (1:23.16), and Molly Oesterling in the 50 (27.21) and the 100 freestyles (100.09). Morgan Stagge was second in the 100 back (1:17.68).

Kaleigh McGinn placed second to senior Lauren Brunn in the 1-meter diving, 149.2-141.8.

Wins for the boys included sophomore Nick Oesterling in the 200 individual medley (2:15.85) and the 100 back (1:01.62); and Andy Dashiell in the 50 free.

Kyle Howard in the 1-meter diving placed third with a score of 100.85.

The 200 medley relay (Oesterling, Brady Niles, Dashiell, senior Justin Starkey in 1:56.80) and the 200 free relay (1:41.65) both finished second.

Hawkins applauded Niles and Oesterling for getting the relays off to a full-body length lead before the Olympian quartet came back and won it.

“Brady and Nick are swimming so well,” said Hawkins. “We couldn’t hold on to it. We just need a couple more guys to step up. We’re getting there.”

Niles was second in the 100-yard freestyle (56.41) and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.78).

Kuehl was third in the 100 back in 1:11.65, a drop of four to five seconds.

“Spencer has really started to figure it out,” said Hawkins of Kuehl’s progress. Hawkins also noted the improvements of Jacob Buening, who is swimming for the first time.

“He’s starting to figure out what it takes at this sport,” he said. “The big drops tonight are good to see.”

Starkey was fifth in the 100 free (1:01.11) and Todd Overmyer was sixth in 1:06.68.
