North girls, South boys win County Meet

Greensburg — The South Decatur boys and the North Decatur girls track and field teams captured county championships Tuesday in the annual County Meet.

Highlighting the performances was a new school record for North Decatur in the girls 1600 meter run. Freshman Megan Hoover won with a time of five minutes, 30.33 seconds.

Greensburg’s boys took second to the South boys, 67-64.5. North’s boys scored 24.5 for third.

South’s boys won seven events and went one-two in four.

Turning in a double win was South’s Randall Canady. He won the 100-meter dash in 11.59 seconds and won the long jump with a personal-best mark of 18 feet, two inches. Canady set a PR in the 200 dash with a second-place 24.94.

Josh Campos set a PR while winning the 200 in 24.69. He was second to Canady in the 100 (11.88).

Chris Meadows took the 110-meter high hurdles in 17.30, while teammate Byron Haley was second with a PR of 17.66). Meadows was second in the 300 hurdles (44.78).

Luke May led the county in throwing events, winning the discus with a PR of 128-0 and taking third in the shot put 39-09.

Two other second places for the Cougars were Haley in the long jump (17-07), Sam Studler a PR in the 400 dash (54.41) and Justyn Clark in the 3200-meter run (11:44.94).

Nick Grissom and Tristin Ralph both tallied PR’s in the 800 runs.

The South boys 4x800 meter relay team won with a PR time of 9:17.28 and the 4x100 team clocked a winning 46.44.

Greensburg’s boys also won seven events (six individual), including two 1-2 finishes.

“The entire team stepped up and we had many solid performances, but it was not enough to get the job done,” said Greensburg boys coach Mike Myers.

Senior Colin Evans won the one-mile (5:03.61) and the 800 (2:09.94). Senior Chase McCreary won the 400 (54.02). Freshman Peyton Buening won the 3200 (11:33.04). In field events, senior Ryan Martin took the shot put (45-0) and junior Sean Sellers was the county champ in the high jump (6-04).

The Pirates’ 4x400 relay team of Evans, McCreary, Ethan Amburgey and Averi Fultz won in 3:46.9.

Greensburg’s 4x800 (McCreary, Buening, Francis Teague and Jeremy Meadows) was second (9:24.03) and the 4x100 was a close second in 46.46.

Senior Pete Myers was second in the shot (44-10.5) and Evans was second in the discus (122-03). McCreary was second in the 800 (2:19.78).

North’s boys recorded one event win and placed second in three others. Kevin Nielsen was the 300-meter hurdle champion in 42.43, and he took second in the high jump (5-08). Eric Moorman was second in the 1600 (5:10.59). The North 4x400 relay was second in 4:00.34).

Fifth place - Evan Wallpe, discus- 106-06.

Hoover sets North record in 1600

The North Decatur girls track and field team edged the Greensburg girls 67-63. The Lady Cougars were third with 26 points. Each school brought home at least one county championship, and four different athletes took two events apiece.

The Lady Chargers won nine events, including seven individual events.

Megan Hoover highlighted the girls side with a school-record time of 5:30.33 in the 1600-meter run, edging Greensburg freshman Shelby Pake’s time of 5:36.68 in a race that was in doubt until the final lap. Hoover had come within three seconds of the record (5:35) on April 4 against Eastern Hancock. Hoover also won the 3200 in 12:24.58.

North senior Jenna Meyer was a double winner in throwing events. She tallied a shot put of 35-10 and a discus throw of 108-00.

Freshman Kaylee Rosenbach also was a double winner, taking the 300 hurdles (55.09) and the high jump (4-10). She was second in the 100 hurdles in 19.09.

Baili Ewing won the 400 dash in 1:09.77 and was second in the long jump (13-10).

North’s girls won two relays. The 4x800 clocked a time of 11:23.16 and the 4x400 clocked a 4:47.75. The North 4x100 was second in 56.28.

South sophomore Olivia Watkins led the Lady Cougars in scoring. She won the 100 high hurdles in 18.34, and was third in the 300 hurdles (58.97) and in the long jump (13-09). Her 100-meter hurdle time was a personal best.

Greensburg girls coach Katina Tekulve said the Lady Pirates battled hard against North Decatur and South Decatur during the meet.

Freshman Taylor McIntosh was a fourth double-winner for the girls. She took the 200 dash (27.66) and the 100 in 13.18.

Freshman Kasey Moeller won the long jump (14-01) and was second in the 200 (29.25).

Mary Kamman placed second in both the shot put and discus. Kamman threw her season best in both events with 32-10.5 in the shot and 104-02 in the discus. Her discus performance also set a new career record by more than four feet from last season.

Pake won the 800 with a time of 2:46.25.

Senior Ashton Lunsford was second in the 400 dash (1:11.34), a new PR. Cara Zeigler was second in the 300 hurdles (55.81), a new PR.

Despite falling short of the championship, the Lady Pirates’ several highlights began in field events. Senior Ericka Carman and Brittany Simon, finishing second and third, respectively, also jumped season bests of 4-08. Carman set a new career record by a one-inch improvement.

Zeigler set a new PR in the 100 hurdles (19.18).

South’s Paige Wilmer took second in the 100 (13.63).

Emily Mapes tallied a PR in the mile (6:56.64). Anekah Bower posted PR’s in the 400 dash and the shot put, listed below. Paige Wilmer set a PR in the 100 dash.

The 400 relay team of Lunsford, McKella Lynette, Cara Zeigler and Kasey Moeller, medaled for their first-place team finish (55.69). The Greensburg 4x400 was second in 5:00.69.

The 4x800 relay of Pake, Ericka Carman, Abby Layman and Mary Kate Porter was second in 11:24.88.
