Pirates compete at EIAC track meet

St. Leon — The Greensburg track and field teams competed in the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference meet Thursday at East Central High School.

The Pirate boys finished third in the team standings, as East Central took the team crown. Greensburg scored 71.5 points, while the Trojans scored 163.

“The Greensburg boys track and field team had a solid night at the EIAC meet,” said boys head coach Mike Myers.

All three relay teams finished in third place.

Junior Sean Sellers represented Greensburg with a conference championship in the high jump, defending his title by clearing his opening height of five feet, 10 inches. Myers said a slick approach apron shut down any further attempts for Sellers on the night.

Three seniors tallied third-place finishes or better. Colin Evans was runner up in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:05.40. Ryan Martin took runner-up in the shot put with a mark of 44-04. Evans placed third in the discus, making him Greensburg’s scoring leader on the night. He threw a 118-10 in the discus. Peter Myers took third in the shot put with a mark of 42-03.

Peyton Buening was the Pirates’ lone fourth-place finisher. He clocked a 11:20.88 in the 3200-meter run.

Senior Dustin McReynolds placed fifth in the pole vault with a height of 8-00. McCreary was fifth in the 400 dash (55-06). Senior Shane Ploeger placed in two events. He was tied for fourth in the high jump (5-04) and fifth in the long jump (17-10.50).

Cody McConnell was fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (18.21).

Kevin Beaver took sixth in the discus (104-08).

Francis Teague took sixth in the 1600 (5:02.52).

The relay teams each finished third. The 4x800-meter relay of McCreary, Buening, Teague and Michael Back, clocked a 9:29.88. The quartet of Averi Fultz, Ethan Amburgey, Ploeger and Sellers, took third in the 4x100 in 46.81. Amburgey, Alex Martinez, Fultz and McCreary clocked a 3:52.74 in the 4x400.

“This was a great evening for the team and many athletes performed better than their seeded mark,” noted Myers.

Boys team scoring:  1. East Central 163; 2. Batesville 133; 3. Greensburg 71.5; 4. Franklin County 61.5; 5. South Dearborn 45; 6. Lawrenceburg 18.

The boys will be in action next Thursday as they travel to East Central again for the IHSAA Sectional.
