Pirates blank rival Bulldogs 4-0

Greensburg — The Greensburg varsity baseball team rebounded from a 6-5 loss to Jennings County with back-to-back wins. Greensburg beat Columbus North 18-6 Saturday and blanked Batesville 4-0 Monday.

Greensburg recorded a 4-0 conference win over visiting Batesville with quality pitching and alert play. The victory improved the Pirates to 3-1 in the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference and 9-2 overall.

Greensburg senior Tyler Burcham pitched six innings of three-hit, one-walk baseball. Burcham earned the win after striking out 10 batters, and junior Tom Lawrence pitched the final inning by striking out three batters.

Batesville sophomore Bryan Hoeing, who allowed five hits, two walks and struck out three, endured the loss.

“It was a good win for us,” said Greensburg head coach Scott Holdsworth. “We took advantage of some things. We put some pressure on them and we were heads-up.”

Greensburg started the scoring in the third inning. Burcham singled, and two outs later, junior Macy Holdsworth walked. Senior Austin Schultz reached on an error, and Holdsworth scored on the play.

In the fourth, senior Riley Billieu singled and senior Luke Kane reached on an error. Both runners advanced on a passed ball. Senior Jack Eberhardt reached on a fielder’s choice, and sophomore Josiah Buell reached on another error, allowing Kane to score. Eberhardt and Buell advanced, and Burcham grounded out to drive in Eberhardt.

The Pirates wrapped up the scoring in the sixth. Buell drew a walk, and scored on a Rigney double to make it 4-0.

“It was good to get a win against a quality opponent and a pitcher of that caliber,” said Coach Holdsworth. “Nights like tonight will do nothing but help us get better.”

Greensburg is making up a postponed conference game against Franklin County Wednesday on the road, scheduled for 5 p.m.

Pirates wallop Bull Dogs 18-6

Greensburg led 6-1 after the first inning, 10-1 after two and 13-4 after three.

The Pirates led 13-6 going into the sixth inning, but enacted the 10-run rule after scoring five to take the 12-run lead.

Senior Luke Kane recorded the win, pitching four innings and striking out four batters. Tom Lawrence pitched two innings in relief.

Kane and senior Riley Billieu each tallied three hits. Kane, along with seniors Austin Schultz and Kyle Moeller, drove in five runs apiece.

The Pirates fell to Jennings County 6-5 Friday on the road after the Panthers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Greensburg had a 2-0 lead after the first inning, but Jennings County scored four runs in the third inning before the Pirates came back with three straight.

Burcham led Greensburg with three hits and Schultz tallied two. Schultz drove in a team-high two runs.

Greensburg scored four quick runs in the first innings and never looked back. The Pirates scored two more in the fourth inning.
