Lady Chargers conclude challenging week

Shelbyville — The North Decatur varsity softball team concluded an active week Friday night.

The Lady Chargers traveled to Milan Tuesday in a losing effort, falling 4-2. Collecting two hits were senior Lindsay Nobbe and junior Anna Wallpe. Freshman Kiley Stier and sophomore Anna Schwering also tallied hits.

Head coach Sam Field said junior Myra Steele pitched “an outstanding game,” giving up two earned runs. He noted that the Lady Chargers continued to play great defense with no errors.

The Chargers traveled to Versailles Thursday and fell to South Ripley 4-3. Stier, freshman Mary Hughes, junior Alison Wallpe, Anna Wallpe, and Steele, tallied hits for North.

“Myra continued her good pitching on the mound, giving up just two earned runs,” said Field.

North hosted Edinburgh Friday night. The visiting Lady Lancers dealt the Chargers a 17-7 loss. The Lancers scored 10 runs before North went to the plate, all 10 runs being unearned off Steele as a result of four errors.

The Chargers, however, fought back in the second inning. Following two hits to begin the frame, Steele tallied a strikeout on a full count. The next batter lined out to shortstop Kiley Stier, who tagged out the runner at second base to complete a double play and kill the threat.

Hughes started the home half of the second with a single to center, then advanced to third on an error when the ball was misplayed and rolled to the fence. Alison Wallpe drove in Hughes with a fielder’s choice to first, putting North on the board.

“North fought hard from the first inning on and played very well after the first inning,” said Field.

Hughes and Alison Wallpe finished with two hits apiece. Wallpe tallied a double. Stier, Lindsay Nobbe and Anna Wallpe also notched hits.
