Crothersville — The South Decatur varsity baseball team defeated host Crothersville 14-0 Friday night on the strength of senior Matt Gatewood’s nine runs batted in.

Gatewood hit two home runs, including a grand slam, during a 4-for-4 night at the plate. Gatewood added a double.

South head coach Andy Seegers could not recall the last time a player drove in that many runs in a game.

“Matt Gatewood was pretty impressive tonight,” said Seegers. “That’s impressive for any individual to have in the game.”

The power spread throughout the lineup. Senior Byron Balser hit 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and 3 RBI’s. Senior Taylor Campos hit 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Junior Taylor Kopplin recorded the winning decision on the mound. He struck out six batters and allowed just three hits. Balser tallied the save in relief.

The Cougars improve to 13-6 on the season.

South, in the Shawe Memorial Sectional 60 tournament, will play Hauser Thursday at 7:30 p.m. after a first-round bye. On Wednesday, Rising Sun will play Oldenburg Academy, and Jac-Cen-Del will play Shawe Memorial. South or Hauser will play the winners of Wednesday’s games in the Sectional Championship, Monday at 5 p.m.
