Connersville hosting all 3 local schools

St. Leon — The Greensburg, South Decatur and North Decatur track and field teams turned in solid performances at the IHSAA Boys Track and Field Sectional meet at East Central Thursday. All three schools will send at least two athletes to the Connersville Regional tournament this Thursday.

Greensburg placed fourth out of 11 teams, with 67 points. North took sixth with 45, and South scored 41 for seventh place. East Central won the meet with 139 points, while Batesville was second with 125. South Ripley took third with 69. Rising Sun (55 for fifth), South Dearborn (34 for eighth), Milan (22 for ninth), Jac-Cen-Del (14 for 10th) and Lawrenceburg (3 for 11th) rounded out the scoring.

Individual champions on the evening who automatically punched their ticket to the regional were junior Sean Sellers in the high jump and senior Colin Evans in the 800-meter run (2:06.27). Sellers posted a height of six feet in the high jump. Evans also qualified individually in the discus with his second-place finish of 129 feet, three inches. Seniors Ryan Martin (45-09) and Peter Myers (44-07) rounded out the individual qualifiers with their third/fourth place finishes in the shot put.

Also advancing were the 4x100-meter and the 4x800-meter relay teams. Team members running in the sectional in the 4x100 (47.41) were senior Averi Fultz, senior Ethan Amburgey, senior Shane Ploeger and Sellers. The 4x800 runners (9:03) were Chase McCreary, Peyton Buening, Francis Teague and Michael Back. Those runners and the alternates will also travel to Connersville next week.

Placing for the Pirates, but not qualifying, was Ploeger in the long jump (17-03.5). The Pirate 4x400 relay of McCreary, Amburgey, Evans and Fultz, clocked a 3:51.17.

Fultz placed eighth in the 100 dash, clocking a 12.45.

Francis Teague took eighth in the 1600, clocking a 5:05.02. Another distance runner, Peyton Buening, placed sixth in the 3200 in 11:11.33.

Nielsen advances in 3 events

North Decatur junior Kevin Nielsen qualified in three events. Nielsen won the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 42.48 seconds, and placed second in 11.5 seconds to advance in the 100-meter dash. He took third in the high jump with a mark of 5-10.

Senior Nick Gehrich will compete in the discus throw. He tallied a third-place mark of 125-10 to qualify for the regional.

Despite not advancing, North’s Curtis Hillebrand took sixth in the 200 dash with a time of 25.18. Derek Hocker placed seventh in the long jump (17-00.5).

Placing for North, but not qualifying, was the 4x800 team of Eric Moorman, Curtis Hillebrand, Brady Holloway and Kaleb Kramer with a time of 9:48.66. The sixth-place 4x400 North relay (Nielsen, Hillebrand, Holloway and Winston Miley) clocked a 3:53.22.

Eric Moorman took sixth in the 1600 (5:03.08).

The eighth-place 4x100 team of Gehrich, Hocker, Malone and Miley, clocked a time of 50.64.

For South, junior Chris Meadows advanced to the regional in the 300 hurdles with a fourth-place time of 44.02, and also the 110 hurdles (third in 17.05).
