Greensburg — Greensburg senior Macy Holdsworth was a recipient of a prestigious award while he and the Greensburg basketball team competed in the Hall of Fame Classic on Dec. 28.

Holdsworth, a member of the National Honor Society, was awarded the Richard P. Jennings Scholarship. His parents, Scott and Kara Holdsworth, stood by his side as he accepted the scholarship from the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame committee.

According to Holdsworth, Greensburg head coach Stacy Meyer nominated the fourth-year varsity starter on the basketball team.

“I was really excited when Coach Meyer came to me and told me that he had nominated me for such a great scholarship at such a prestigious tournament,” said Holdsworth. “A few weeks later, he came to me again and told me I had won. It was such a great feeling that the Hall of Fame committee chose me for the scholarship.”

Holdsworth is a member of Student Council, a Peer Tutor and is in the Mentoring Program. He has maintained a 3.9 GPA while taking a college based curriculum.

“Staying on the top of things in the classroom has always been preached about by my parents,” he said.

Holdsworth has participated in numerous projects. He has been a leader in his church and has helped coach in all of Greensburg’s youth leagues and camps.

“I want to thank the Hall of Fame, Coach Meyer, and my family because without them I would not have received this scholarship,” said Holdsworth. “Lastly, I want to thank Pirate Nation for all the support at New Castle during the games and the awards ceremony. It’s special when a community comes together and backs us all the time during our play, but especially the applause I got. It’s truly amazing what a big influence Greensburg has had on me during my high school career.”

Meyer commented on Holdsworth’s value to Greensburg afterward.

“Macy has separated himself from most athletes in the classroom,” said Meyer. “He has and will continue to represent his school, community and team in a positive fashion.”

The Jennings Scholarship is named for an outstanding gentleman, successful businessman and dedicated citizen to the city of New Castle. Richard P. Jennings was the first volunteer coordinator for the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. His countless volunteer hours and tireless spirit are remembered by the fellow volunteers each year as they raise scholarship funds. His wife, Gloria, and his entire family have continued to generously support the Hall of Fame since Jennings’ death in 1995.

Casey Yager of Rushville Consolidated High School was the female recipient of the scholarship.
