Greensburg — Two winters ago, Greensburg senior Matt Scheumann and his wrestling teammates could only look on as the Pirate grapplers struggled through a 5-21 season.

For the past four years, Greensburg head coach Matt Cochran has been building a program not only to compete, but to sustain success and contend for championships.

Greensburg’s 62-15 win over Batesville boosted the Pirates’ record to 11-3 as the team enters the season’s stretch run. Greensburg has won its first two dual meets against conference opponents.

“It’s great seeing your team come a long way,” said Scheumann. “from being a freshman seeing your team winning just two meets, to being a senior and expecting your team to win every meet. That’s quite an improvement over four years.”

Scheumann is just one of six Pirate seniors enjoying a resurgence of the Pirate wrestling program. Honored Tuesday night were Scheumann, Joel Chase, Joe Buening, Drew Neisius, Colten Black and Blake Wood.

“I’m proud of these seniors,” said Cochran. “The success they’re having is hard work they’ve put in over the years on the mats and in the practice room. I’ve really enjoyed watching them grow.”

Greensburg tallied eight pins over the Bulldogs, including two to open the meet and set the tone.

Nathan Hayes began the night for Greensburg with a pin over Batesville’s Garrett Watkins at 285 pounds.

Dakota Ballard pinned Batesville’s Hunter Fetters at 106 pounds, making it 12-0.

Batesville’s Michael Deal at 113 pounds won a 9-6 decision over Zack Bartosz. The match had been tied at 4-apiece after two rounds.

Brandon Butz of Greensburg pinned John Moody, making it 18-3 in favor of the Pirates.

Zach Strobel at 126 pounds recorded a pin over Jackson Michalksi.

Batesville’s Ben Westerfeld pinned Greensburg’s Victor Ablaine at 132 pounds, making it 24-9.

Jordan Smiley made it 30-9 with a pin at 138 pounds over Chris Schene.

Blake Wood recorded a pin to make it 36-9, pinning Xavier King at 145 pounds.

Joel Chase tallied a 13-4 major decision over Derek Davidson at 152 pounds.

Greensburg’s Joe Buening at 160 pounds tallied a 9-1 major decision over Neal Nobbe.

Greensburg’s Damon Allen took the 170-pound weight class by forfeit.

Colten Black made it 56-9 by pinning Levi Nordmeyer.

Batesville’s Jarett Hooten at 195 pounds pinned Greensburg’s Dylan Cain.

Drew Neisius captured the 220-pound match with a pin over Zach Strub that capped the dual meet win.

“We had good energy, and I was really pleased to see that,” said Cochran. “When we wrestle like that, we’re hard to beat. We brought that tonight.”

Cochran credited the seniors with the program’s turnaround.

“The turnaround we’ve had is due to their effort in and out of the season,” he said. “These seniors have really worked hard, and they’re not done. We have some big goals on the horizon for ourselves.”

Greensburg next competes in the Tri High Superduals Saturday, with weigh-in set for 8 a.m.
