Pirate wrestlers, 16-3, win third tournament

The Greensburg Pirate wrestling team improved to 16-3 by going 5-0 to win the Tri Super Duals.

Undefeated wrestlers on the day were freshman Zack Bartosz, senior Joe Buening, senior Colten Black, senior Drew Neisius, and senior Nathan Hayes.

Freshman Dakota Ballard, sophomore Brandon Butz, junior Jordan Smiley, senior Blake Wood, senior Joel Chase, freshman Damon Allen, and freshman Dylan Cain were 4-1.

The Pirates travel to Franklin County for a dual on Wednesday, and then to South Dearborn on Saturday for the EIAC tournament. The JV squad will go Seymour on Saturday for the final event of the year.

The Pirates opened up the day by defeating Northeastern 64-15.

In the second round, the Pirates were able to outwrestle a solid Centerville team 45-24.

“That was a good test,” said Greensburg head coach Matt Cochran. “Centerville is good on their feet and they did a nice job of attacking us. We did a good job of staying after them.”

Centerville finished as tournament runner up, with its only loss being to Greensburg.

In the third round, Greenburg wrestled extremely well and beat Daleville 81-(-1). Daleville received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which deducted a team point from their score.

In the fourth round, the Pirates trounced Alexandria 68-8.

The Pirates completed their tournament victory by defeating host Tri 61-18.

Cochran commented on the Pirates’ third tournament victory of the season. The Pirates also won the Madison Quad and the Brown County Invite.

“We were pleased with our effort and the outcome,” said Cochran. “We are wrestling well, right now. This upcoming week will be big. Franklin County is a good team, and of course, the EIAC tournament is something we have been looking forward to all year.”

Scores: Pirates 64, Northeastern 15; Pirates 45, Centerville 24; Pirates 81, Daleville (-1); Pirates 68, Alexandria 8; Pirates 61, Tri 18.
